SUNDAY CLASS | Drop Spinning 101
Instructor: Jerome Edwards, BlueCat Bobbins
Drop spinning is an ancient method of transforming raw fibers (like wool, alpaca, or cotton) into yarn. It involves spinning the fibers using a weighted spindle that twists the fiber into a continuous thread. It’s called “drop spinning” because the spindle often hangs or “drops” as you work.
What You’ll Learn in a Drop Spinning 101 Class:
1.Introduction to Tools
•Drop Spindle: A simple wooden or metal spindle, either top-whorl (weight at the top) or bottom-whorl (weight at the bottom).
•Fiber: Unspun fiber, often called roving or sliver, used to create yarn.
2.Basic Techniques
•Drafting Fiber: Gently pulling fibers to thin them out before spinning.
•Spinning: Twisting the fibers to create a strong, continuous thread.
•Winding Yarn: Wrapping the spun yarn onto the spindle to store it.
3.Hand and Body Coordination
•Using a combination of hand movements and gravity to keep the spindle spinning while managing the fibers.
4.Yarn Finishing
•Setting the twist in the yarn by soaking and drying it to make it stable for crafting.
5.Tips for Beginners
•How to troubleshoot issues like overspinning, uneven yarn, or tangling.
•Choosing the right spindle and fiber for your skill level.
Why Take a Drop Spinning Class?
•It’s a relaxing, meditative craft that connects you to traditional textile-making techniques.
•You’ll gain the skills to make your own yarn for knitting, weaving, or crochet projects.
•Perfect for anyone interested in sustainable, DIY fiber arts.
All materials needed for this class are included in the ticket price.
